Sierra Club: Help Stop Needless Logging

Help Stop Needless Logging

Save our Forests from Needless Logging
This 30-inch diameter tree is over 100 years old.
The forestry industry is always pushing for less regulation  – and now with fires burning, the state legislature is eager to comply.

Here’s the situation:

The timber industry always pushes for less regulation.  State legislators claim that bills AB425 and SB901 will reduce future fires. The bills to seek to reduce “fuel load” by eliminating state supervision for thinning projects that remove trees as large as 32-inches in diameter over 300 acres.

But this legislation will not prevent future fires!

  1. This legislation focuses on the wrong places. Sixteen out of 17 of the most devastating wildfires in California have little or nothing to do with forests.
  2. This legislation will increase unregulated logging, potentially endangering habitat and water quality in the streams Californians depend upon for drinking.
  3. This legislation will not stop large high intensity wildfires. Large fires occur only when there is severe drought, low humidity, high temperatures and most importantly, high winds – no matter what kind of “fuel treatment” has been implemented.
  4. This legislation does nothing to make houses more able to withstand fire — which is what we really need to be doing.
