“The Trump Administration no doubt sees the banning of glyphosate by European countries as an opportunity for the United States to get behind American farmers who use glyphosate and to grab a greater share of the global food market. Earlier in the year, Germany announced a multi-year, phased-in ban of glyphosate. Other countries such as the Netherlands, France, and Belgium have also either banned glyphosate or severely restricted its use.“
Trump’s EPA Stands Behind The Safety Of Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide Once Again
The current administration in Washington has blinders on when it comes to supporting American business at any cost
Monday, December 23, 2019 – The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has once again come down heavily on the side of German life sciences company Bayer, parent of Monsanto, and has filed court documents stating their opinion that glyphosate does not cause cancer and is safe if used as directed. The DOJ has previously issued a public announcement that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto Roundup herbicide, was non-carcinogenic and that the chemical did not cause cancer.
“In April 2019, EPA released the Glyphosate Proposed Interim Decision for public comment. As part of this action, EPA continues to find that there are no risks to public health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label and that glyphosate is not a carcinogen. The EPA is proposing management measures to help farmers target pesticide sprays on intended pests, protect pollinators, and reduce the problem of weeds becoming resistant to glyphosate,” according to EPA.com. The EPA went on to elaborate: “EPA scientists performed an independent evaluation of available data for glyphosate and found: No risk to human health from current uses of glyphosate. Glyphosate products can be safely used by following label directions. There are no risks to children or adults from currently registered uses.” The timing of the statement was suspect as it came at a time immediately following, as if in response to, Bayer’s request to vacate a 25 million dollar jury award made to Edwin Hardeman, a California farmer that suffers from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that he allegedly developed from coming into direct skin contact with the Roundup chemical mixture frequently, repeatedly, and for many years.
Glyphosate is the world’s most heavily used herbicide and is used in industrial-strength quantities by farmers throughout the world to control weeds that compete with crops for water and nutrients. Using glyphosate-based herbicides has dramatically reduced farmer’s production costs and made their crops and the foods from which they are made affordable to the masses, according to farmer organizations. Farmers stand as one, firmly against banning glyphosate, ad tell lawmakers that doing so would drive up the cost of food and make their farming business noncompetitive. The Trump Administration no doubt sees the banning of glyphosate by European countries as an opportunity for the United States to get behind American farmers who use glyphosate and to grab a greater share of the global food market. Earlier in the year, Germany announced a multi-year, phased-in ban of glyphosate. Other countries such as the Netherlands, France, and Belgium have also either banned glyphosate or severely restricted its use.
There are currently approximately 45,000 lawsuits pending against Bayer/Monsanto filed by plaintiffs with cancer for failing to warn consumers of the risks of developing cancer from coming into contact with glyphosate. Farmers and farmworkers, landscapers, government maintenance workers, and home gardeners and their children are at risk when repeatedly coming into direct skin contact with Roundup weedkiller.
