In response to the worsening outbreak in the state, California officials on Thursday announced a curfew for much of the state that will be going into effect Saturday night. Californians must remain in their homes between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless performing essential activities.

“The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said in a statement.

The curfew applies to 41 counties that are currently experiencing widespread transmission of the virus. The curfew will remain in place until the morning of Dec. 21.

Newsom and local health officials have implored residents to avoid gatherings and travel for the upcoming holidays.

The situation in California comes as COVID-19 conditions around the rest of the country remain dire.

On Thursday, the U.S. reported a record high of more than 182,000 new cases, a record number of hospitalizations and nearly 2,000 new deaths.
