Indigenous Peoples have been fighting for our rights and now need help

“We are asking you to stand with us. As representatives of communities who have carried the brunt of the harm from fossil fuels for generations, we ask you to join us in solidarity—and risk arrest—in Washington DC, October 11-15, 2021, as part of Build Back Fossil Free’s People vs Fossil Fuels Week of Action.”

Excerpted from the Frontline Invitation letter.

Dear Relatives,

In the wake of climate disasters like Hurricane Ida, millions of people are stranded in the Gulf without power or water or homes. In the West, climate-change fueled fires and smoke are decimating millions of acres of wilderness, homes, and entire communities. Wherever possible, people and animals across these danger zones are fleeing for safety all during a climate-related pandemic.

The latest IPCC Climate Report, vetted by thousands of scientists and commissioned by 195 countries, makes two things very clear: The window to avoid the worst impacts of climate change is closing; and the fossil fuel industry is to blame. We must all put pressure on governments to end the fossil fuel era now. Which is why we’re asking you to take action in the coming days, weeks, and months.

CAN YOU JOIN US IN DC TO TAKE ACTION (Oct 11-15)?

We need to send a wakeup call to President Biden and the political establishment in DC. Despite hearing from millions of people and the world’s leading scientists, President Biden hasn’t stopped dangerous fossil fuel projects like the Line 3 pipeline and has continued to issue permits for thousands of new oil and gas wells.

Led by frontline communities who bear the brunt of fossil fuels, Movement Rights, as part of the Build Back Fossil Free coalition will be going to the White House for the People VS Fossil Free Week of Action, demanding Biden declare a Climate State of Emergency and end the fossil fuel era. Please read the Frontline Invitation, signed by Casey Camp Horinek and others living in so-called fossil fuel “sacrifice zones.”

Will you join a massive wave of civil disobedience beginning on Indigenous Peoples Day, October 11-15 to demand an end to fossil fuels? Some of us will come for only a day, others for the full week, and some of us will be risking arrest to make our message clear. There are many ways to show up. *** We also want to make it clear that Movement Rights takes the COVID pandemic seriously and are only encouraging people to come who are vaccinated, practice social distancing and feel safe traveling.

SEPT 9 Join the DIGITAL RALLY People VS Fossil Fuels
We’re just over a month away from this historic action. We’re holding a big Zoom webinar on Thursday, Sept 9th at 7pm ET and ask that you join us on zoom (sign up link here) and share with others. The webinar will feature several frontline leaders sharing why this action is so important and encouraging people to join us in DC.  We’ll also be sharing more logistical details about the action, answering some common questions, and letting people know what to expect between now and October 11 when we start the actions in DC.

DONATE TO HURRICANE IDA RELIEF
& MUTUAL AID

Movement Rights is not asking for a donation today. Instead, we are asking you to give to support relief in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Please consider a donation to Another Gulf Is Possible—an organization we trust, that includes many friends and frontline leaders, and all of whom have experienced hurricanes where they live. These are people who live on the gulf – volunteers from Florida to Texas who know what to do. Through their donation and mutual aid page, they can get care packages of food, clothing, generators, water filters and more into the hands of people most in need.  Please help with a donation of any size if you can.

Thank you for standing with us for Mother Earth and all our relations,

Shannon Biggs, Pennie Opal Plant, and board member Michael Horse (pictured)
